Not Your Typical Snow Day

I envisioned a snow day with soup in the crock pot, a fire in the fireplace, everyone in their PJ's (until we play in the snow), and just being lazy watching movies all day.

Our snow day today is quite different from the one I dreamed of in my head. Here are some pictures of our snow day.

Doesn't it make you cold just looking at the cold, concrete floors and big fans? I assure you, it is as cold as it looks! We do have the fireplace on. I am in my PJ's. But somehow it's just not the same with the loud hum of fans in the background and cold floor we get to walk on.

Let me back up a bit.

We started to notice the shower in the master bath had a slow drain a few days ago. We kept meaning to get some Draino or open up the drain to clean it out, but didn't think about it until the next shower when we would put it back on our list of things "to do".

Well, yesterday when Bart was in the shower, the kitchen sink, hall bathroom sink and all of the downstairs toilets started to make strange, LOUD noises. The toilet in the master bathroom almost overflowed. The toilet in the hall bathroom DID overflow (big time)! I cleaned the bathroom only to have it overflow 2 more times. On the 3rd time, it was obvious that it was sewer water. (Yep, it was as bad as it sounds!)

The plumber got here as quickly as he could to stop the water. Turns out, the back water valve gate was off. This caused the plumbing to back up with no where else to go, but in our house. Thankfully, it was a pretty easy fix (took less than an hour). But the worst part was yet to come. The clean up.

We got a restoration company out as quickly as we could in hopes of drying out and cleaning the carpet that was effected. Well, when sewage is involved in any plumbing incident, it is classified as a "3" which means anything the water touched (the carpet, padding, baseboards, and some times sheet rock) have to be removed and replaced.

This was not how I thought I would spend my Wednesday, that's for sure!

So, after talking to State Farm and getting a couple of estimates from different restoration companies, they got busy. After pulling out the carpet and padding in the front room, dining room and family room, and removing some of the baseboards, they vacuumed up all of the remaining water, cleaned the areas that got wet and then set up commercial size fans and dehumidifiers all through the rooms that were effected.

So, it's Thursday now and we are currently in the "drying out" phase. The restoration company will come back this afternoon to check on things and determine if the loud fans stay with us, or if they can take them away (I am hoping they can take them away).

Our insurance adjuster will be here Friday morning to asses everything. At that point they will determine weather we need to remove some of the hardwoods in the hall way (water traveled under it to the family room) or if they are ok after the drying out process. They will also determine if we need to remove any sheet rock in the hall bathroom/dining room (they share a wall).

God knew this would happen before it every happened. I know it's for a reason. Just not sure what that is. We are trusting Him to see us through it. I am so thankful that our insurance will cover the damages after we pay our deductible.

So, here's to a "not so typical snow day"! At least we can go play in the snow and then not worry about tracking up the house! Concrete floors might come in handy today! Ha!
